Resumption Day Checklist for Teachers
The new term has begun, and while administrators are managing the big picture, teachers are the ones directly shaping a child’s first-day experience. A calm, prepared teacher sets the tone for a calm, prepared classroom. Here’s a quick 10-point checklist to help you walk into today ready.
01 Arrive Early and Sign In
Get to school ahead of students. Sign in promptly and head straight to your classroom. Students should never arrive before you do.
02 Inspect Your Classroom
Check that your classroom is clean, furniture is adequate, and the board, chalk/markers, and basic teaching tools are available and functional.
03 Review Your Class List
Confirm your updated class list, including new students. Know your numbers before students walk in so you can spot absentees or unfamiliar faces immediately.
04 Have Your First-Day Lesson Plan Ready
Even if it’s an orientation-style day, have a simple plan, introductions, class rules, term expectations, or a light icebreaker activity. Don’t walk in empty-handed.
05 Prepare Your Attendance Register
Ensure your register (physical or digital) is ready and updated. Take attendance early and accurately, this record matters from day one
06 Set Clear Classroom Expectations
Use the first day to communicate ground rules — punctuality, respect, participation, and classroom routines, clearly and calmly.
07 Identify New and Anxious Students
New students or returning ones who seem nervous need a little extra attention. A warm word or a buddy assignment can make a big difference on day one.
08 Communicate Term Expectations
Give students a preview of what the term holds. Subjects, key topics, upcoming tests, and any materials they’ll need going forward.
09 Note Any Issues Immediately
If a student needs materials, has a health concern, or there’s a facility issue in your classroom (broken chair, faulty light), report it to the administration the same day
10 End the Day With a Quick Reflection
Before you leave, jot down quick notes — who was absent, who needs materials, what went well, what needs fixing tomorrow. This sets you up for a smoother second day.
